Hunter

Hunter

Hunter is the biggest lap dog you'll ever meet!  He's a gorgeous male German Shepherd, about 2 years old (the shelter has him as 5 yrs but no way!), weighs about 75 lbs and is currently at the Long Beach shelter.  Hunter is another victim of an owner who got him because he was a beautiful puppy, ignored him as he got older, didn't address behavior issues typical of a young dog, and then he ended up on the streets as a stray (hmmm, got out of his yard or let go by his owner?).

Just like every German Shepherd that I've met (and loved), Hunter wants to find a hooman bean to love.  He's loyal, smart and just wants exercise, belly rubs and lots of affection. He has the most expressive face, as shown in the photos, including "awww shucks, you flatter me", "see, I can wink at you", and "I'm so dog gone happy to be with you"!

Hunter's "issues" are that he pulls on leash and shows dog reactivity while on the shelter premises.  However, we've begun to take him off premises, exposing him to other dogs and he's showing great promise in ignoring other dogs when commanded and rewarded with treats.  By the way, did I mention he's VERY motivated by treats?  This boy is super smart and will continue to be a quick study with more training.
FURever has a rescue interested in sponsoring him (will pay for medical expenses and supplies) but a suitable foster must be found before we can get him out of solitary confinement.  The ideal foster for Hunter would be one with experience with larger breeds, who can provide him a daily routine, including plenty of exercise, will continue with his training, and will give him attention and a loving home.  For now he should be in a home with no small children and no other pets.
If interested in adopting Hunter, email petadopt@longbeach.gov to set up an appointment (his ID # is A665323).

If interested in fostering Hunter, go to foster2furever.com, click on the "Save a Life" banner at the topic of the page, fill out our short questionnaire and you'll be contacted to answer any questions you may have about Diesel or fostering.
This handsome boy will make an amazing addition to the family so don't hesitate.  You wouldn't want someone else discovering him first, would you?!
